How to Use the Past Papers

Reviewing past papers is an excellent way to familiarise yourself with the style of questions you’ll encounter when you sit for the HSC. You’ll also get an understanding of the time frames for each section so you can learn how to pace yourself during the test. This approach can improve your confidence and help remove some fears about the exam.

As the day to the HSC maths exam draws closer, you should set aside time to complete past papers and highlight the questions you’re struggling with. It’s ok not to know the answers. This is why going through past papers is beneficial. These sections of previous exams become focus areas for you to study. You can clean up your notes, refer to chapters in your textbook, discuss with your teacher, or book time with an HSC maths tutor to better prepare yourself for the test.

Completing multiple maths past papers can build your confidence with all the topics that might get covered in the exam. It’s a good idea to simulate test conditions as much as possible. You should set a timer and complete the practice paper in a quiet place where you won’t get interrupted. This will help you:

  • come up with strategies when you don’t know the answer
  • understand how to manage your time so you finish the exam
  • learn how to remain calm under pressure

If you find yourself struggling to improve, you should chat with your teacher or reach out to an HSC maths tutor to get further guidance on preparing yourself for the exam.

So grab your pen, reset your calculator and start the timer. Good luck!
